3D Filament 101: An Introduction to the Wonderful World of Thermoplastic Materials
3D filament is the material used to print objects with a 3D printer. It consists of thermoplastic materials, such as ABS and PLA , and is supplied in spools that are used by the printer to build objects from thin wires. There are different types of 3D filament, each with their own unique properties and applications. When choosing the right filament, it is important to consider what you want to print and what you expect from the end product. Whether you are a beginner or already experienced in 3D printing, with the right knowledge about 3D filament you can ensure that you always choose the best material for your projects.
PETG filament
PETG has the advantages of ABS without the disadvantages, as well as the advantages of PLA without the disadvantages. It is stronger and more flexible than ABS . Another feature is that you will not get any unpleasant odors in the workspace with this material.
PLA filament (Polylactic Acid)
PLA is the virtually odorless, at most sweet-smelling, ecological counterpart of ABS .
The print performance is almost the complete opposite of ABS . PLA is also no problem for outdoor projects. The printed objects are indeed strong, although they are much more brittle than other plastics. When a PLA object falls, it is more likely to splinter or damage. Thin parts are more likely to break than bend.
ABS filament (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene)
ABS filament has the least chance of clogging and is one of the easiest materials to print with, from the hot end / extruder point of view. However, it is a bit more difficult to treat afterwards. After printing, it shrinks slightly when it cools down. It is therefore an absolute must to print on a heated bed, and preferably within an enclosed-case printer. At the very least, print in a room that is not too cold.
